Car Insurance Land Rover (Car Insurance). for quality, performance, and looks, should I go K&N or AEM?for quality, performance, and looks, should I go K&N or AEM? I'm looking to install a cold air intake on my 2005 Ford Focus ZX5 2.0L DOHC, and I am having a hard time deciding between the K&N 57 series, http://parts.autopartsonlinecanada.com/parts/apocanada/wizard.jsp?year=2005&make=FO&model=FOCU-ZX5-003&category=B&part=Air+Filter and the AEM one, http://www.jcwhitney.com/performance-cold-air-induction-systems-with-dryflow-synthetic-filter-system/p2005550.jcwx?filterid=c2034d620y2005j1#prodDetailTabPanel. If anyone has any insight into these products, please, write away! Do some proper research. When you have you will avoid K&N if you want your engine to last. The reason they breathe better is that they are less restrictive. Not only do they let in more air they let in more dirt, also known as wear particles. Don't forget that as well as performance - i.e. reducing restriction in the air-flow, a filter MUST protect the engine, by filtering grit which will cause catastrophic wear if it is allowed to enter the engine! K&N have a long history of using good design and top grade materials and workmanship, to produce very-effective filter-systems which are tried and tested in all forms of motorsport, from fast-road to rally, Top-Fuel dragsters to Formula 1. I would say K&N because in my opinion it is a more reputable company. One of my buddies has an AEM cold air intake on his 2001 Dodge Ram and absolutely loves it. He noticed a big difference from stock to now performance wise. However I would personally recommend K&N I had it installed on my 2006 Grand Prix and it does absolute wonders, and K&N has a long history of being dependable and worth while. Either of these intake systems will provide you with gains in horsepower and performance for your vehicle. They both will work to protect your engine from harmful dirt and debris. The main difference between these two kits is in their construction and design. The AEM intake system is a cold air instake system with a dryflow filter media. This non-woven synthetic media will provide you with an easy to wash and re-use air filter that does not require oil like the K&N intake. The K&N intake system is designed to improve performance by 11.85 HP @ 5797 RPM. The construction of this air filter is a multi-layered cotton guaze that is coated with oil to capture particles. There is a common misunderstanding that “K&N filters flow more air, so they must let more dirt pass through.” It is easy to understand why that statement makes sense, but our filtration technology operates on a completely different principle. We use airflow as an easy to understand term, but it describes a much more difficult physical property, restriction, and that is what robs your engine of making all the power it can. Land Rover . What Kind of Oil Should Be Used in a Diesel Engine?Diesel engines need a high viscosity oil or a synthetic oil . Since these engines combust at much higher compression ratio than gasoline engines, the oil used in the motor has to be able to withstand tremendous forces, usually of 40,000 to 50,000 psi. Most newer diesel engines will recommend 15W-40 because it is heavier and thicker. Function Oil is used to lubricate the pistons as these are pushed into the combustion chamber and return downward to the crankcase. Diesel engines typically turn at a lower rate than a gasoline motor, but create greater pressure. Heavier oils last longer and can withstand the workload created by the diesel motor. Considerations Synthetic oils can also be used in a diesel motor. 5W-40 synthetic can be used in most newer motors with equivalent or better results than a regular 15W-40 oil. Synthetic oils are more expensive, but provide additional protection against motor wear and tear. Oil Changes Synthetic oils still have to be changed. Follow the car manufacturer's recommended mileage for changing the oil. Always remember to change the oil filter as well as the engine oil. Most diesel motors recommend changing the oil every 5,000 miles. Benefits of synthetic oil Synthetic oils can lower the exhaust gas temperatures(EGT) in a diesel by a significant amount. Lower EGT means the engine can operate at maximum efficiency and create less heat, which can reduce damage and wear to vital motor parts. A normal operating temperature for a diesel should be around 500 degrees, rising to about 1000 degrees under acceleration. Facts A diesel engine is less volatile and burns at a lower temperature than a gas motor. This is the reason that high exhaust temperatures are so dangerous. The turbo on a diesel motor filters air and compresses it before forcing it into the combustion chamber to mix with diesel fuel and power the motor.
Land Rover . Cost of Making BiodieselPeople have been searching for alternatives to fossil fuels since the first days of the automobile. Biodiesel is an alternative fuel source that never quite gained widespread appeal. However, with the current concerns about energy prices and oil reserves, biodiesel is coming back to the forefront as a possible replacement for petroleum diesel. After decades of process refinement, biodiesel now stands as a more cost effective fuel option. You can make biodiesel in your own home for much less than you can buy regular diesel. History Biodiesel was actually one of the first fuels tested by early automobile innovators as an alternative to gasoline, according to BiodieselAtHome. When Rudolph Diesel invented the diesel engine in the 1890s, he used peanut oil for fuel. However, it was the price advantage of petroleum diesel at the time that eventually won out over biodiesel. Considerations The intended use for making biodiesel can impact the cost of making it and selling it. Sellable homemade biodiesel must meet Department of Energy standards, according to the Alternative Fuels and Advanced Vehicles Data Center. Making your own biodiesel may offer some short-term cost advantages, but it could also damage your engine if not properly formulated. Types Producing biodiesel requires chemical, oil and equipment costs, according to BiodieselFuelOnline. The average production process requires oil, lye and an alcohol compound; methanol is the preferred alcohol choice. As of October 2009, lye costs about $5 per pound, and even cheaper if you make larger purchases, and methanol retails for around $2.35 per gallon. For oil, you can use an agricultural source of virgin or waste oil, typically found in restaurants, according to Wilson College's biodiesel production program. Spent grease from restaurants is typically free and the preferred choice among biodiesel enthusiasts. Equipment may be the biggest hurdle to producing biodiesel. You can make your processor, but this requires extra time and knowledge to learn how to build one. Small processing plants sold online can run into the thousands of dollars. Benefits The benefits of making biodiesel usually outweigh the costs to produce the fuel. Wilson College reports that once you have the necessary equipment, biodiesel can cost as little as $1 per gallon. Between November 2008 and November 2009, diesel gasoline cost fluctuated between $2 and $5 a gallon, according to Energy Information Statistics. The savings of making biodiesel add up quickly the more you drive. In addition, biodiesel is much better for the environment than regular diesel and reduces the amount of oil waste generated. Potential Biodiesel is becoming one of the most popular choices for drivers, likely because of its portability. Just about any diesel engine can run on biodiesel, negating the need for new infrastructure necessary for other alternative fuels like hydrogen. The Department of Energy reports that the size of the biodiesel industry tripled in 2004 and 2005, and then doubled in 2006. In addition, the United States offers several tax incentives for producers of biodiesel. Soybeans, a common plant oil source, has excess capacity that should further lower biodiesel prices in the future. Chapter 11 provides details about shock absorbers that are worth reviewing before you read this section. Many vehicles are equipped with MacPherson strut suspension instead of conventional shocks. This simplified and improved system takes up less space and Is well worth having. The downside is that because MacPherson struts are surrounded by, and assembled with, the suspension springs, they're always under spring pressure and therefore must be replaced professionally. You may be taking your life in your hands if you tamper with them. (Chapter 11 has information and illustrations of MacPherson and other strut systems.) You can tell whether your vehicle needs new shock absorbers by leaning heavily on a fender or placing your weight on a bumper and then releasing it suddenly, watching to see whether the vehicle returns slowly to its original position. If it continues to bob up and down, you need new shocks. Another way is to stop fairly short. If your car dips up and down a couple of times before coming to rest, you need new shocks. Bad shock absorbers increase tire wear and can cause you to lose control of the steering if you go over bumps and dips at high speeds. If any of these things seems to be happening to you, have your shocks replaced. Although replacing standard shock absorbers isn't hard, the job can be brutal if you have to jack up your vehicle and crawl under it. Unless you can replace them under supervision on the lift at an auto class, I strongly recommend having a professional do it for you. To save money, buy the shocks yourself and pay a professional to install them. The store will know what type of suspension system your vehicle has and what kind of shocks it needs. Within limits, you do have a choice: "Heavyduty" shocks provide a slightly harder ride; other shocks may not do as well with the entire family and two Great Danes in the car, but give a softer ride. Some shocks even provide automatic level control for vehicles that carry loads ranging from very heavy to almost weightless. Suit yourself. Chapter 17 Land Rover .
